Happy New Year/ New Decade ACI-IL! I find myself thinking back to 10 years ago and what I was doing, both personally and professionally. It’s amazing how far things have come and how quickly time seems to fly by – to me 2010 was just the other day and I was helping as a proctor with my first Grade I class. A few other things that happened in 2010: Phil Mickelson wins his third green jacket at the Masters, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, and our very own Chicago Blackhawks won their first Stanley Cup since 1961 off of Patrick Kane’s OT goal edging the Flyers for a 4-3 victory.
At our January dinner meeting we welcomed Steve Jones from IDOT District One, he gave us an update on the 2020 construction season and beyond. As one of our more popular dinner topics, the IDOT update was well received with a Capital program larger than we have seen in over a decade!
Also in January, we helped put on a Concrete-101 Seminar jointly with ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers). The event took place at Ozinga’s main Chicago plant in Chinatown. Guests were able to listen to material presented by Ozinga’s technical staff and got to see a virtual drone tour of the plant and office areas. The event was well received, and the group stayed around to ask a ton of questions of the expert panel. As a member of the concrete community, I was thrilled to see so many engineers taking an active interest in learning more about concrete and how it can be used more in their projects. We look forward to planning more of these seminars or events for our members and other members of the construction community.
The ACI Spring Convention is rapidly approaching and we as a Chapter have been very busy planning for this historic event, which takes place at the Hilton Hotel & Convention Center in Rosemont from March 29th thru April 2nd, 2020. If you haven’t done so already, I would highly recommend getting your hotel reservation booked and registration for the event completed before rooms run out and prices go up. We are still looking for volunteers to help during the convention, Scott Kelly is the Volunteer Chairperson – please reach out to Scott to sign up today!
Looking forward to seeing you all at our February 26th, 2020 dinner meeting at Erie Cafe. We look forward to hearing from Sean Guzik from Chicago Department of Transportation, as he plans to give us an update on current CDOT practices and the concrete construction outlook for 2020. Please join us for our Board Meeting, which takes place at 3:30pm before out dinner meeting each month.
Here is to a great year and an even greater decade!!

January 2020 Meeting Recap
The January meeting provided insight into the 2020 and future plans of IDOT. Unfortunately, George Houston was unable to present. However, Stephen Jones admirably filled in for George. The biggest news from IDOT is the excitement to design and execute new projects thanks to the recently passed capital bill. New projects may be slow to arrive in 2020 as the department shifts back to design of plans. The major project for District 1 will be continued work on the Jane Bryne Interchange which is slated to be completed in 2022. Many in attendance were pleased to hear IDOT will begin planning to repair the I-80 bridge in Joliet this year. Thanks again to Steve Jones for the presentation.

Bowling Ball Competition
FRC Bowling Ball Competition – ACI ILLINOIS
The objective of this competition is to demonstrate the benefits of fiber use in concrete, to facilitate interaction between industry professionals and student members, and to enable students to earn some money towards competing at the ACI National Convention in Rosemont, IL in Spring 2020. Each team will design and fabricate a fiber-reinforced bowling ball. These are a simplified version of the National Competition Bowling Ball Rules, to be held in the Spring 2020 in Rosemont, IL.
The competition will take place at the ACI IL facility in Elmhurst, IL on 8 February 2020 beginning at 9am. Lunch will be provided. The results of the competition will be evaluated with the winning teams awarded at the ACI IL dinner meeting on 26 February 2020 at Erie Cafe. Teams and advisors are invited and welcome to attend – registration for the dinner meeting is on the ACI IL webpage.
Competition and Prizes
The Local Competition has a two prize categories: Student Team and Industry Team. The winning Student team will be awarded a prize of $750 to help offset their costs in representing the IL Chapter at the National Competition in Rosemont, IL at the end of March. The winning Industry team will be awarded “The ACI IL Student Competition Non-Student Traveling Trophy” – a beautiful crown, cast in concrete and weighing approximately 20 lbs. The prizes will be awarded at the ACI IL dinner meeting on 26 February 2020.
